Description
Yarrow, also known as Achillea millefolium, is believed to have been named after a Greek hero, Achilles. The myths around yarrow say that Achilles gave the plant to his warriors before battle, using it to inspire courage. The other part of its name – millefolium – was given for the many fern-like clusters of leaves that make up its foliage.
The myth seems to have been founded on some fact, as yarrow’s reputation as a useful herb during war continued through the ages. It has been used as a healing herb for generations. Yarrow leaves have been used to stem the bleeding of the wounded.
Yarrow was considered to have powers, particularly:
- To help heal and regenerate
- To promote love, courage, peace, and a healthy heart space
- Clearing vision, providing clarity, and quieting distractions
- For women: to protect, shield and beautify
The ability of yarrow to help reduce bleeding is also beneficial in the management of some menstrual conditions. If there is excessive bleeding, some naturopaths or herbalists may use yarrow to help reduce blood loss from very heavy periods. When there is a severe fever, yarrow tea can help; it is known to assist in causing a persistent fever to break.
