Description
Meadowsweet is a popular herb in medieval Europe for its sweet, almond fragrance. It was used as a strewing herb to help freshen the air. It was also used to flavour mead – the liquor made from honey.
Meadowsweet was also well known to help relieve aches. German scientists later became interested in the flowers of this plant as a pain reliever, fever reducer, and anti-inflammatory. It contains a compound that has since been further developed into aspirin.
Symbolically, meadowsweet has been used to represent peace, beauty, and happiness. It has protective properties and is often associated with courting or marriage.
Meadowsweet is also a perfect example of the way the whole of an herb is better than its parts. It has the benefit of aspirin while also protecting against the side effect most pain killers have – damage to the gut.
Meadowsweet is used for a wide variety of purposes, including:
- Help in controlling fevers,
- As an antiseptic diuretic to help with urinary or bladder infections,
- Settling an acidic stomach,
- Soothing diarrhoea in children, and
- Helping with joint disorders including gout.
